Even now--without Garreg Mach as a base and the support of the Knights of Seiros, we wouldn't have gotten anywhere in the war. We tried leading an invasion of Fhirdiad from Fraldarius before and failed. Maybe Dimitri's presence would have changed things enough, but I doubt it.
All I'm saying is that the Church is a major part of the problem and has been since the beginning.
