vrdantwind: (What could you be afraid of)

"Well, she's certainly got a sense of humor," Claude remarks absently, studying Glenn. So this is the brother whose death fractured the Fraldarius family so deeply...one of the names to which Dimitri swore his vengeance. One of the names right out of history, although really the Tragedy was still so recent that it probably hasn't made it into any history books yet. It's not even been quite a decade yet...

"I guess if you've talked to some of the others, though, you must have a pretty decent handle on things here by now?" This is a carefully vague sounding out. Claude has no idea when Glenn is from, or what he knows. Does he know he was dying - or dead - like Rodrigue? Is he from before the Tragedy? Did someone else tell him what happens to him? Claude doesn't know, and he wants to be cautious in his approach to conversation until he feels out the terrain.

"I doubt you'd know me, but - I'm Claude von Riegan, recently Duke Riegan of the Alliance." He likes 'recently' in this context. Recently as in 'I was duke before I came here'? Recently as in 'just made duke'? Recently as in 'just stopped being duke'? That word can work in a lot of ways and Claude doesn't have to specify which he means, which leaves him a comfortable amount of wiggle room. It also suggests that, because it was 'recent', Glenn may not have heard of it no matter what timeframe he's working from.
