Personality: To call Claude's personality complex is to understate the nature of complexity. Claude was actually born Khalid, the child of a noblewoman from Fodlan who eloped to the country of Almyra to marry its king. This isn't mentioned to get into his history(amply covered in the wiki), but to provide context for Claude's childhood - the tensions and xenophobia on both sides of the divide between Fodlan and Almyra meant that he grew up targeted by harassment, discrimination, and even assassination attempts due to the disgust his countrymen felt for his Fodlan heritage. (In a painfully ironic reversal, when he went to Fodlan later in life, he was then discriminated against for his Almyran heritage...at least, before he adopted the Claude pseudonym and began hiding the details of his history.)
These events spurred the development of the three major aspects of Claude's personality. First and foremost, it inspired Claude's desire - indeed, his lifelong dream - to eliminate racism and xenophobia between nations by opening borders and encouraging cultural exchange between them, Fodlan and Almyra most specifically. It prompted, by necessity, the development of a flexible nature, high intelligence, goal-oriented pragmatism(a plan doesn't have to be honorable or pretty so long as it works), and a habit for planning ahead and coming up with schemes. And, of course, it fostered Claude's tendency to not trust others too deeply, preferring to play his cards very close to his chest.
As a result, Claude's a very enigmatic individual, for all his friendliness; even those closest to him rarely feel like they know him, and are often aware of how little they're being told even if they don't know exactly what they're not being told. Those who don't know him well - or who have reason to be pitted against him - can find him, or rather their complete inability to know exactly what he's thinking or planning, downright unsettling. Those who do know him well know that he's a good man who can at least be trusted to have good motives, even if his methods tend to be unorthodox at best, and potentially underhanded at worst. But, ironically, even Claude's willingness to get his hands dirty is usually for ultimately noble purpose; he might be willing to give an entire enemy army a nausea-inducing poison before a battle(a theoretical possibility he discusses in canon), but his ultimate goal would be to prevent the casualties to both sides that such a battle would inflict. Claude is a diplomat and schemer first, someone who would much prefer to discuss and negotiate solutions, and is only ever a soldier by necessity.
At the end of the day, Claude is a warm, compassionate man (albeit with trust issues) who wants what's best for everyone, but who is also pragmatic enough to do whatever will get the best outcome, even if it's distasteful or dishonest. He'll never compromise results for morals...but he's not interested in results that don't serve his ultimately good ends in some way, either.
